Just a few moments ago Autodesk sent out this email to a large percentage of their clients. I'm aware of how many of our clients have these emails filtered into their spam, but due to the amount of questions we receive on this topic, I wanted to post the email here as another source for this information. Please see below for the latest update of the Autodesk 360 (cloud) terms of service.

Dear Autodesk Customer,

We have updated our Terms of Service applicable to our Autodesk® 360 services*. Our services continue to improve and our terms and conditions have improved at the same time. We have increased the readability and have clarified additional protections for you. The words in our terms of service govern your use of the services but we wanted to share highlights of the improvements and modifications we have recently made to help you better understand the principles of how we treat your data, and our commitments around confidentiality and security.

So what exactly are these new changes? We’ve focused on these specific topics:

1)

Improved Readability: We worked hard to make the Terms of Service easier to read and understand. Of course they are legal terms and sometimes legal terms can sound strange but we hope we made them more straightforward.

2)

Confidentiality and Security: We have always taken the confidentiality and security of our customers’ content seriously. Although our services have always been designed to focus on protection of your content from unanticipated threats and third party access, we have added specific language around security and confidentiality.

3)

Authorized Users: Our services enable collaboration. We understand that customers may authorize users that are not their employees. With our named user models, our customers can securely authorize others working for them, or on a shared project, to access and use services a customer has paid for. We have made clear that you may allow these parties to use the service for your benefit.

4)

Content Ownership: Some users were concerned that if they used our services, they would give up ownership. Although it has always been our position that our customers own their content, we have tried to make it even clearer that customers own their content and we have updated the terms to make clear that you retain ownership of your content. We have also clarified the access Autodesk has to your content as part of providing you the services. The use of Autodesk’s cloud services involves access to your digital content and information.
Without this access, these cloud services could not function.

5)

Post-Termination access to Content: We hope and expect that you will continue to use our services for years to come but we do understand that you may migrate away from our services in the future. Because we recognize your ownership of your content, we have added specific commitments to make your content available to you if our relationship ends.

We have also updated our Privacy Statement to make it easier to read, and to include our privacy practices for our personal design and creativity tools such as Socialcam, Instructables, Pixlr and imm.io. We continue to treat your personal information with care and respect. The updated Privacy Statement and Terms of Service are effective as of
March 19, 2013.

Thank you for using Autodesk® 360 Products and Services

We at CTC have recieved numerous questions and inquiries from our clients about the "terms of use" associated with the Autodesk 360 services; such as the cloud rendering, simulation, analysis, and storage space services provided. Today, Autodesk has released clarification to the "terms of use" regarding intellectual property.

Autodesk formal statement below:

At Autodesk we understand that our customer’s data is important and we respect intellectual property (IP). We want to make sure you know that when you use Autodesk 360 or any other cloud services from Autodesk, you own and control your own IP. The words in our terms of service govern your use of the service but I wanted to share some background with you about why the agreements include the rights granted by you in these agreements.

The use of Autodesk’s cloud services involves your digital content and information so our Agreement gives us certain rights in order to provide these services. For example, in order to take advantage of the cloud services the systems providing the functionality we do things like “display” “modify” “reproduce” and “transmit” your content and data as part of providing the services. Without the ability for us to do these things with your information and content, these cloud services could not function.

Autodesk's rights are limited to the context of providing, maintaining, repairing, protecting, organizing or otherwise administering the services and improving and modifying the services. The license is limited to this and its purpose is to make sure we can offer you these services. You still fully own the content, data, and IP.
We respect and understand your concerns and want to assure you that protecting your rights and ownership of your intellectual property is our priority.

BIMlist 2.0 Changes:

New Features:

  1. Allows for the use of UNC pathing. This makes it much easier for multi-office firms to use the content browser if they do not have drive letters synced across the network that are standard locations for their Revit content.
  2. BIMlist is now compatible with MySQL databases, in addition to SQL.
    1. MySQL is a free version of SQL that many firms use.
    2. BIMlist includes database table scripts to structure data for all three versions of SQL that BIMlist now supports (mySQL, Microsoft SQL, and Microsoft SQL compact edition).
  3. BIMlist will now memorize the last selected group in the browser (if someone works mostly in the "health care" group, they will have this group selected upon opening).
  4. We have added activation options to slient install option.
    1. This allows for a "hands off" installation by admins to the user's machines.
  5. When searching for families they are now highlighted if they are already in the project (it previously worked only while browsing).

Things are quieting down for the end of the year, so I thought it might be a good time to post some helpful links as they pertain to our clients Autodesk subscription. We find many of our clients do not fully take advantage of their subscription services, and rather see it as only "prepaying for my upgrade".

Autodesk has focused in offering more and more "value adds" to their subscription clients, and you may occasionally see emails from them highlighting some of these. I thought it best to include the series of links below that explain many of the other services you, as a subscription client have available to you.

Among some of the more exciting developments on the Autodesk front is the newly available Autodesk Cloud. One of those features of Autodesk Cloud is the Autodesk Cloud Documents, which provides Autodesk subscription customers with access to cloud storage for their files.

This whitepaper describes the security protocol for Autodesk Cloud Documents, and addresses some of the concerns customers have with uploading their files to Autodesk Cloud.
